Click here for a piece of education history, copyright 1972. Hey, you could re-build this if you want just by printing it out, cutting the circular parts, gluing them to index card stock, and connecting it all with a paper fastner.

(tip: print in grey-scale)

Just consider what this device--and the ideas offered-- assumes of the teacher, the content, the nature of learning in the classroom! The mental space, the resourcefulness, the richness, and the possibilities were all there as the sixties ended, and it was all so taken for granted.

Consider the transformation that has taken place over the past 10 years, and what the current ideas have done to America's learning culture. Many young teachers may not be able to appreciate what has been lost. Their enthusiasm may be misplaced as they enter the profession intent on raising test scores.

Neverthless, I hope you can put this little wheel of a world gone by to good use.

Give it a good spin!
