Anna Quindlan's Newsweek article, 'Testing 1-2-3' is a powerful clearing of the voice?a boldly-expressed indictment of what testing has done to our nation?s learning culture. Someone finally had he nerve to say it on prime time, major new magazine platform. 'Child Abuse.'

But of course the testing mentality is merely a logical outgrowth of what was there to begin with: a model based purely on academics that we adopted from Prussia early last century. Even though it is spiritually broken, federal and state testing (our true system of education) will continue its goose-step until the monster falls in its own juices. Meanwhile, teachers and kids must continue taking the test, remain in their seats, and not put their pencils down.

There is reason to hope and take heart. Teachers who speak the language of play possess the power to neutralize many of the cultural toxins and side effects of testing--that is, until they are told, as was Myrna, to stop being creative and start teaching. But maybe now parents and teachers will have voice enough to resist. After you have read Anna Quindlen's piece, exercise your voice and register your comment. We have been quiet and stoic for far too long.
