Summer 2007

Happy school year's end everyone -- parents included -- and congratulations on a job well done. Summer's a great time to make good use of your Puppetools subscription. Write in the forum about your exploits in play, make some puppet models, develop plans and techniques for their use, jump in and learn with a buddy, contribute video, create a learning unit. When you sign in, why not proceed directly to the bottommost portion of the workshop where you can explore research and white papers that represent the theoretical side of play.

We are pleased to welcome two new Group Memberships: 12 teachers from the Annie Fisher magnet school in Hartford, Ct. and the Monarch Teachers Network.

The Partner Program is underway. Take a few minutes to review our Partnership Plan. Become a Partner and help us grow.

Puppetools welcomes two new organizational partners: Youth Educational Services and Engrammatron

Youth Educational Services of Richmond, Va. YES and Puppetools have entered into a strategic partnership to make Play central to YES's training. Youth Education Services has successfully engaged kids in the selling of local newspaper subscriptions for over a decade. Remember when kids did that, and it was considered a wholesome and productive endeavor?--Well, not only is it still wholesome, but to some people in the newspaper business, it is also life-saving. As the numbers of newspaper subscribers nationwide are fast declining, Richmond's newspaper subscription rates are healthy and climbing--thanks to the kids from YES who conduct business with flair and fun. YES has embraced play-based communication techniques in its business, sales, and marketing programs. Founder, Derrick Hill says, "We are empowering kids to develop communication skills that will benefit them immeasurably for the long term."

What is Neuropedagogy? The folks at engrammatron can tell us. In her paper on Neuropedagogy, The Somatic Appraisal Model of Affect: A Framework for Neuropedagogy, read at the annual meeting of the CSSE - The Canadian Society for the Study of Education, Kathryn Patten raises the possibilities for improved teaching practices stemming from Play. Ms. Patten is quoted, "While there is no grand scheme of brain-based education that can miraculously transform learning and teaching, researchers should take care not to alienate brain-based enthusiasts," she said. "Educational neuroscience is informed by both neuroscience and neuropsychology. It is about the mind-brain-body of teachers and learners: their emotions, thoughts, brain-body functions and resultant behaviour." We are delighted to have these organizations as part of our growing community.

Finally, Puppetools web site has been granted a US Patent specifically for its unique ability to produce, transfer, and facilitate play energy into teachers' hands.
